When should you use your FPL chips?

A practical guide to choosing between Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain in the 2026/27 season.

Start with the decision your squad needs

A chip is most useful when it solves a problem that ordinary free transfers cannot solve cheaply. Before choosing one, write down your current 15 players, bank, free transfers and the fixtures over the next few gameweeks. Then ask whether the problem lasts for one round or for longer. That distinction is usually more useful than chasing the highest projected score on a single screen.

FPL Intel can compare the squad you have with possible moves and save a private chip idea. It cannot play a chip for you. Confirm the final team and chip on the official Fantasy Premier League site before the deadline, and check fresh team news because minutes and fixtures can change.

Wildcard: rebuild for several weeks

A Wildcard lets you make unlimited transfers without a points hit and keeps the new squad afterward. Consider it when several positions need work at once: too many injured or doubtful players, a poor spread of upcoming fixtures, or a squad structure that makes each normal transfer awkward. A single disappointing match is rarely enough evidence on its own.

Judge a Wildcard draft across a run of fixtures, not only the first deadline. Check that the squad remains within the budget and club limits, that its starting XI has reliable minutes, and that the bench is useful without absorbing too much money. A draft that looks strong only because it assumes uncertain players all start is fragile.

Free Hit: solve one exceptional gameweek

A Free Hit also allows unlimited changes, but the changed squad lasts for one gameweek. Your previous squad returns for the next deadline. That makes it a possible response to a blank gameweek when several of your usual starters have no fixture, or to a short-lived schedule where a temporary XI is much stronger than your permanent team.

Look at what comes after that one round. If the original squad is still sound, a temporary change may be enough. If the same problems continue for weeks, a Wildcard or a sequence of free transfers may be more useful. FPL Intel shows a returning pre-Free-Hit squad for planning so the temporary picks are not mistaken for permanent players.

Bench Boost and Triple Captain: choose the right opportunity

Bench Boost adds your substitutes’ points to the gameweek total. It depends on all four bench places having realistic minutes and fixtures, rather than one attractive starter. Check goalkeeper and outfield availability, blanks, rotation risk and whether improving the bench would weaken the starting XI. A double gameweek offers extra fixtures, but it does not guarantee that every player appears twice.

Triple Captain makes your chosen captain’s points count three times instead of the usual two. Compare the candidate’s one-gameweek forecast, likely minutes and opponents. A double gameweek may create more opportunity, but it can also add rotation risk. A reliable single fixture can be preferable to an uncertain double; the model estimate is a guide, not a promise.

The 2026/27 timing rule and a simple checklist

The official 2026/27 rules provide one Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain in each half of the season. The first set must be used by the Gameweek 19 deadline and does not carry into the second half. The second set becomes available from Gameweek 20. Only one chip can be played in a gameweek. Check the official rules again before acting, especially if you return to this guide in a later season.

Before saving a plan, confirm five things: which players are actually in your current squad; the official bank and selling prices; the chip already used in this half; the deadlines and fixtures; and the latest availability news. Compare the plan with doing nothing and with ordinary free transfers. If the advantage is small or depends on uncertain minutes, waiting can be a reasonable decision.
